5 signs you grind your teeth at night

Around 70% of the population grind their teeth at night. Grinding your teeth is easy to be aware of if you do it in the daytime, but bruxism – a sleep disorder that sees your grind teeth during the night – is harder to be aware of.

Here, EP-DENT are bringing us five signs that you grind your teeth at night:

  1. Waking up with an aching jaw and a headache – the key word here is, ‘ache’. Both teeth grinding and jaw clenching can not only damage your dental health, but irritate the neck and head muscles. So, if you find yourself waking up most days with a dull ache in your jaw area, teeth grinding is the answer.

  2. Daytime chewing – as much as chewing is unavoidable with food, chewing inedible objects such as pencils or sunglasses toughens the jaw muscles, meaning your jaw becomes naturally tighter and strong. When we sleep, we grind or clench down on our teeth with up to 130x the force we do during the daytime, so an even stronger jaw can do more harm than good, no matter how tasty sunglasses are.
  3. Your back teeth look like pot holes – the state of our teeth can reveal all the damage we do to them without realising it. Try standing in front of a mirror and relaxing your jaw muscles, then open your mouth and check your teeth surfaces. If your molars resemble pot holes and/or your front and/or back teeth appear flatter, these may be signs you have bruxism.

  4. Impressions or indentations on the tongue – if you wake up with a visibly sore tongue, this is a major red flag that you’re stressing your jaw during your sleep. Bruxism occurs throughout the night in short bursts, but the damage is still high.
  5. Puzzle-piece teeth – a chipped tooth is never a good sign. The grind can wear down your teeth which, overtime, leads to cracking.
